Natural wood shelves – Making your own wooden shelves is a quick job that will give you storage space and save you money. Use medium density fiber for cheap labor, coniferous wood such as pine for a medium-priced project and hardwood such as oak or teak for a more expensive plan. Take advantage of the fact that making your own shelves gives you the opportunity to customize to your exact needs.
Use a spirit level to draw a straight line where you want your wall shelf to be. Attach a bracket near the ends of the line and in the center. For a longer tool, subdivide the remaining spaces and add more supports, which should be at least every 2 feet. Cut your platform, which should be about a quarter wider than the arms of your chosen brackets. Mount the shelf and screw the brackets in place.
A floating platform is one with hidden supports. These are strong steel rods mounted on plates with screw holes. Chisel holes in the back edge of the platform with the same size as the plates. Next, drill holes the size and length of the rods at the rear edge of the shelf. Use a spirit level to draw a line where you want the platform to be. Mount the brackets on the wall. Push your platform on the rods and secure it in place.
